Serk Cycling Beijing

Beijing is one of Asia's best kept cycling secrets. Mountains on three sides of the city trap Beijing's notorious air, but drive over the first mountain range and cycling heaven awaits—so too does better air and blue skies. Out here, high above the city, lies thousands of kilometres of quiet, snaking mountain roads to rival the best cycling destinations in the world.

Don't believe us? Spend a weekend here riding. We promise you'll be totally blown away!

We've been riding these roads for 10 years and this hotel-to-hotel, fully supported weekend riding trip explores the best Beijing has to offer. Expect stunning scenery, big climbs, adventurous back roads and of course, coffee stops and some great local restaurants.

Day 2.

Huai Rou - Miyun

Today we meet at Serk and drive out to Huairou. The route takes in some of the most beautiful geography Beijing has to offer. We'll ride up through the spectacular Baihe Valley, known among local Beijing riders as the "100km natural art gallery" for its incredible views. We'll follow a perfect, smooth and virtually carless road that snakes its way up the white cliffs lining the valley, before finishing off in Huairou for a well earned feast at one of Beijing's best-loved eateries, specialising in Sichuan food. We'll spend the night at one of Miyun's local four-star hotels.

Serk is introducing a beginner cycling program for 2018.

Why Ride in Beijing?

Beijing is a great place to go cycling. We believe it has some of the best cycling terrains close to a major city anywhere in the world. There are quiet roads with spectacular scenery, fresh air, nature and of course that Great Wall.

Why Join Serk Ride Beginner Program?

Our new beginner cycling program is aimed at helping you fall in love with cycling. We want to show you how amazing cycling is for fitness - physical and mental. We also want to help you explore a Beijing you never knew existed. You'll also make a bunch of awesome friends along the way.

So what are you waiting for? Come and give Serk Ride a shot and let us show you why so many members of our club live for Serk Ride on the weekends!

What is the ride formula?

These rides will be beginner-focused and suitable for anyone that can ride a bike :

1. The courses are short and won't have too much climbing;

2. You'll ride on the quietest roads we can find in Beijing and be accompanied by a Serk ride leader;

3. We offer advice to beginners to help you simplify the seemingly complicated world of cycling (clothing choices, how to use gears properly, fixing flat tyres for example)

4. We’ll limit the size of the group and provide optional 1-on-1 sessions with Serk Cycling experts to provide tailored advice on cycling.

5. We'll make sure you enjoy yourself and that you don't go out of your comfort zone. We'll have a support vehicle in case anything goes wrong.

6. Fun! We love cycling and we love sharing our passion with other riders. This ride is going to be fun!

Who are the Serk Experts?

Liman - Liman grew up in Beijing knows the roads like the back of her hand. She is the co-founder of Serk Cycling so she also knows bikes. Ask her how to change a tyre in a jiffy or adjust your headset. Better still ask her about women's bike fit and her global search for the ultimate small wheel bike.

Shannon - Fell off his bike using clipless pedals for the first time in the 1980's (he was using the first generation of clipless pedals back then). The last time he fell off his bike with clipless pedals was in Feb 2018. He has a lot of experience in all things cycling - from racing bikes at the elite level in China through to riding bikes in a Panda suit in Europe.

JJ - Has been teaching rowing from beginner rowers to high-performance U23 level athletes. Lifetime cyclist and an all-around positive guy. Ask him anything about getting fitter, faster and how to eat correctly on the bike.

Pricing:

To kick off beginner cycling programme - we have a special offer for non-Serk members.

300 RMB. This offer is limited to your first time on a Serk Beginner Ride.

350 RMB. Beginner Ride plus 1-on-1 session.

500 RMB.  Beginner Ride plus Bike Hire

550 RMB. Beginner Ride plus Bike Hire plus 1-on-1 session.

Special membership offer - Sign up for a full Serk Ride membership (details here) on the same day as your Beginner ride and receive a free upgrade to Serk Gold Membership (effectively an additional 10% off).

Start at Serk

Finish at Serk

To celebrate the end of the Spring Classics where hardmen flourish (and to finish something we started but didn't quite finish during the Qing Ming holiday), Serk is putting the Qing back on the calendar.

We'd like to pay respect to the one of the hardest of all hardmen - Eddy Merckx. He preached a simple message -- "ride lots" and legend has it Merckx woke up way before dawn to do his 200km rides before his rivals even started their day.

So we are organizing a pre-dawn epic ride through Beijing and its mountains!

Riding before dawn isn't something we usually do however the 3-day holidays always come with horrible traffic (last year it took us 3 hours to get back to Beijing) so we decided to ride out early and ride back into Beijing rather than drive.

If you haven't ridden in Beijing at night here is your chance to experience the 4th dimension of Beijing cycling. There are few cars/even fewer people and a type of quiet that you'll be hard-pressed to experience again anywhere in China. Descending is a dream (you can see cars coming from a long distance) and climbing in silence is almost spiritual. Actually, scratch that - we'll bring along some music and spice up the climbs!

There are 2 options for this event:

The Full Qing - 200km
This is paying proper respect to Eddy. If you complete the challenge it is pretty much guaranteed you'll have Eddy luck the rest of the year. You'd win the Tour if you somehow managed to get to the start line.

The Half Qing - 100km
Paying pretty good respect to Eddy but you also need to balance this with some level of sanity. If you complete the challenge expect lots of Eddy luck for at least half of every ride this year.

Schedule

0345 Meeting at Serk

0400 Start riding

0900 - 1100 Arrive back to Serk (Half Qing)

1200 - 1400 Arrive back to Serk (Full Qing)

Note

This ride is unsupported. If you have an issue at 4 in the morning you are on your own. Bring enough tubes, food, and water. We will have a contact number for medical emergencies - anything else is not supported and is part of the adventure. You should carefully think through your planning.

Ride Level

This ride is not suitable for beginners. It is an unsupported endurance ride so you'll need to be an experienced rider. If in doubt get in contact with us!

Requirements

You will need very good lights for this ride. There are some great LED lights available on Taobao for reasonable prices. Make sure you check the lights are bright (600 - 800 Lumen recommended) and battery life is long (at least 3 hours)

At Serk we recommend the top level lights from Bontrager.

Front light - Bontrager Ion 800
Rear light - Bontrager Flare R

If you order by Friday, 28th noon we can offer you a discount of 10% on these lights.

Front light - Bontrager Ion 800 Usual price is 698 RMB / Pre-order price is 10% off 628 RMB.

Rear light - Bontrager Flare R Usual price 380 RMB / Pre-order price is 10% off 342 RMB

Why are these lights so good?

They are super powerful/light and easy to charge. Serk Staff has used many different lights (including top-level Specialized and Taobao specials) and the Bontrager is our choice due to the small but powerful size, ease of charging and robustness. Warranty on Bontrager product in China is also exceptional if there are any issues. One of our customers' lights fell off because of incorrect mounting at 40km/h. The light survived and still worked but not as well. It was still replaced by warranty. The lights are expensive but worth every RMB.

Miyun/Mutianyu/Wenyu

Marvelous Miyun.

To the North East of Beijing lies Miyun which offers some of the best cycling in the region. The quality of roads, scenic vistas and the impressive S 310 road with its sinuous curves cut out of the mountainside, leave even the most traveled cyclists in awe. Who would imagine that such world-class cycling terrain existed so close to one of the worlds biggest cities?

This ride is designed for those that want the full experience that Beijing has to offer. A gorgeous ride, peaceful surroundings, and the small back road climbs almost completely devoid of traffic. To get out to Miyun requires an investment in time – around about 2 hours from your hotel each way but it will worth every second.

The ride starts at the Heilongtan Scenic Area on the S 310 road and slowly climbs up above the Baihe River. The road twists and turns as it hugs the side of the mountain. You travel through a series of short tunnels carved out of solid rock. As you exit each tunnel new vistas appear and you’ll notice the road continuing to snake up the mountain on your right. There is just the right balance of up and down to inspire you to get out of the saddle and push over the crests. Once you arrive at the top you’ll be tempted to stop the bike and capture the amazing views.

After 18kms of rolling hills, we turn right up to a short sharp little climb on a back road before descending right down to the Baihe river and riding along its banks for another 11kms. We stop at Liulimiao for a lunch break at a local restaurant and then trace our steps back along the S310 admiring the views from the opposite direction. We end with a well-deserved downhill to the van and cold drinks from the local shop and in summer that usually means a cold beer.

The Great Wall.

No visit to Beijing is complete without seeing the wondrous Great Wall of China. And while you’re at it you might as well squeeze in a ride too, right?

We’ve designed a unique experience for the traveling cyclist to combine both and have you back at your Hotel by lunch – your hosts won’t even know you’ve left.

We pick you up nice and early to escape the early morning traffic chaos and drive to the start point on a quiet back road. The route rolls through small villages for the first 20 km before turning to the east where you’ll glimpse the wall as it snakes its way up and down the mountains in the distance. A little further down the road we will rest our bikes against the Wall, swap cycling shoes for something more comfortable and embark on a quick journey up the steps of the Great Wall. Bring your camera as there are plenty of opportunities for photos that will look great on your Strava feed for the day.

Cycling shoes go back on and we tackle a meandering climb for 4.5 km followed by a flowing descent into the Bohai valley. As we pass through more rural villages you’ll get a real sense of the difference in pace and income levels between rural and urban China.

If time permits and you’re up for another challenge you can climb up the road to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall for a few more selfies after you’ve caught your breath. It’s all down here from here back to the van where we finish off with a coffee and compare photos from the morning. Within 80 minutes we’ll have you back in the city with a smile on your face and the Great Wall conquered.

Wenyu Loop.

Looking for a ride to stretch your legs in  Beijing. The Wenyu River loop is a popular early morning route for Beijing cyclists and on most days you’ll find cyclists out getting in some training before work.

The route starts in the City and takes the least busy roads out towards the airport. Once you arrive at the Wenyu river the cycling is quite pleasant and along this 15 km stretch of river, the speed and intensity are always up a few notches.

Things slow down as we return to the city as the roads are congested by 7am. Luckily that’s all forgotten once you’ve had your first sip of coffee at our favourite coffee shop.

Saturday Club Ride.

Each Saturday we organize a big group ride in the mountains on the outskirts of Beijing. Each week the route is different and depends on group size/ability as well as the pollution status and weather although they are always approx 60 – 100 km.

These rides are aimed at the confident/competent rider, wanting to join an established group of local riders. Whilst there is a ride leader, the expectation is that riders are very experienced at riding in a large peloton, and are comfortable not knowing the exact route the rides will take.

Riders are allocated into groups according to rider ability and speed, which is provided on booking – Beginner, Intermediate or Elite.  If you want a local experience & a bit of adventure with a great group of guys and girls, while traveling internationally, this ride is for you.
