Taiping Lake Cycling Getaway October

For readers outside China check out the video in high res on vimeo here

Join us for a cycling trip on some of the best roads anywhere in China around the picturesque shores of  Taiping Lake and Jiuhua Mountain..

Jiuhua mountain is one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism. The mountain is not only famous for its Buddhist culture but also noted for its natural landscapes featuring old pines, green bamboo forests, strange rocks, waterfalls, streams and caves.

Taiping Lake is a 60km long  lake that is flanked by forest and mountains and offers a huge diversity of cycling terrain – from narrow riverside roads to long switchback climbs and even some gravel riding for the adventurous.

The area is rich in culture, history and traditional architecture and rolling through the landscape on a bicycle is a pure delight.

The trip takes places the October Holiday period from Oct 2nd – 6th.

Many of the roads in this area are newly built and have very little traffic making for some excellent cycling. Serk have been riding the roads for the last few years and have dozens of routes available to cater to your individual preferences.

Routes range in distance from 20km – 200km and cater for all levels. The majority of roads are newly paved so road bikes are appropriate. There are also some non-sealed roads in the area which are fine for road bikes.

Each day we usually offer 2 riding options – a difficult and easy route making this an ideal trip for bringing along beginner cycling partners.

Accommodation will be in one or two locations depending on total number of days of the trip  – the accommodation is located in Jiu Hua inside a temple on the side of Jiuhua Mountain and the main retreat right on the shores of Taiping Lake.

Typical  trip schedule.

Day 1.

Depart Beijing / Shanghai late afternoon by fast train or plane.

We will pick you up at Jiuhuashan Airport or the train station and after a short transfer by road you will arrive at your destination Tianhe retreat for the night. If you took the early flight / train you’ll have time for an afternoon ride around the lake.

Day 2.

After a hearty breakfast of slow cooked apple and steel cut oats we start a ride to the south of the lake into the mountain area.

We will ride through lush mountain roads over rolling hills  with the water always by our side. The roads are very quiet and the only sounds you’ll hear apart from nature will be the sounds coming from tea processing which takes place in workshops along the road. The nature is lush and the streams and rivers flow with crystal clear water.

For Lunch we will stop for some local cuisine (usually a freshly caught fish) in a small village. After lunch if its hot we will stop at a secluded spot by the lake and cool down with a swim.

Back to the retreat in the afternoon. Relax in the sun, take a stroll or do a little hike on the little mountain trail around the lake. In the evening we will be treated to a tea ceremony and talk on tea culture by the owners of the retreat – David and Armand.

Today’s long ride will about 100-130km or the short option 20 – 50km

Day 3.

Kickstart the day with some freshly brewed Rickshaw Roasters coffee and another healthy breakfast. We will start riding towards Dabei buddhist temple via the back road through Lingyang. This road is hardly travelled by vehicles and has a number of peaceful well preserved villages along the route. We will stop to see an old temple and house that sits next to a flowing clear water creek. By lunch time we will arrive at Dabei buddist temple for lunch. After lunch you can visit another temple area and climb up to the top of Jiuhua mountain. Alternatively you can test your legs on the brutal climb next to our accommodation. Kudos to anyone that beats the current KOM – actually kudos to anyone that makes it up the climb.

Morning ride – 54km Optional afternoon ride and climb – 15km

Day 4.

A big day in the saddle today if you are up for it. We’ll ride along the river and deep into the mountains and along some back roads. You’ll be lucky if you see a car today. You’ll arrive back to Tianhe Retreat for a delicious home cooked meal and some crisp beers.

Today’s ride 130 – 180km
Short option also available – 50km

Day 5.

You will be sent to airport / train station to catch the flight / train back to Beijing.

Optional Extra Day/s.

There is option for people that would like to stay extra day.  The extra day will combine a ride with a cultural tour. You can ride around the lake and explore some local villages with distinct Hui culture. You will be able to see tea farms, stroll on the pebble roads of the old town, and visit historical Hui architectural family houses. If you’d like to do more cycling you are welcome to stay extra days or come early and can choose from a number of other awesome cycling routes.
