Ride Mar 19th – Miyun – San Remo

This weekend the Milan-San Remo race takes place in Italy – its the first of the big monuments of the cycling season. To celebrate we will re-create some of the magic in Beijing with our own monumental ride – The Miyun – San Remo. Unfortunately due to the LiangHui meeting our original plan for a whole day event with post ride festivities is not possible.  Nonetheless we will ride the course including some great sections along the Miyun Lake – as close to the scenery along the San Remo coast that Beijing offers !

All riders are required to fill the form below (including self drive) by Friday morning.
* indicates required field

Departure Time :
07.00 Serk.  Arrive at 06.45 am to load bikes
Return Time : 15:00 – 16:00 Serk
1. Beginner – 53km 760m Climbing
We promise this week the ride will all be on perfectly smooth roads ! The route is undulating right from the start. You’ll skirt along the north western edge of the lake over some short climbs and descents along the S310 and X008 roads. After around 17km of riding you reach and archway – turn left here for a little loop on a gorgeous little road. Turn right up the steep concrete road (don’t worry its short and you can walk if you can’t ride up it). Follow your nose back to the main road. Start heading back. On the way back is an optional out and back road to visit a decaying part of the Great Wall for a few photos. Follow the same roads all the way back.
Ride leader : Liman
Average Speed : 15 km/h – 20 km/h
This ride is recommended for all new beginner riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Intermediate Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.

2. Intermediate – 80 km 1134m Climbing
This weeks Intermediate ride is a bit more of a challenge. 13km and about 300m of extra riding compared with last week. It will be worth it as you’ll travel along some gorgeous roads and see another section of the Great Wall which winds its way up the bare mountain. The main climb of the day finishes when you get to the tunnel. If you’d like a bit extra ride through the tunnel and ride down the other side and turn around after 8km or so and come back. More Great Wall viewing along the way.

Ride leader : TBC
Average Speed : 20 km/h – 25 km/h
This ride is recommended for all Intermediate riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Elite Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.

3. Elite – 122km  1481m Climbing
A longer ride with a moderate amount of climbing and a profile that almost matches the real Milan-San Remo (see profile pic below). About half of the ride should be roads that you’ve never ridden. The ride travels anticlockwise around Miyun Lake. There is a lovely undulating section which skirts the shore – squint your eyes and pretend you are racing along the San Remo coastline. The main climb starts at 74km and is 16km long with spectacular views of the Great Wall. The fastest riders should wait at the top for the slower riders. After an exhilarating descent there are few lumps before you finish that are really going to hurt. And just like the real Milan-San Remo the group will desintegrate on these climbs and only the best riders on the day will make it over together. There will be a prize for the first rider over the last little climb (Poggio). Strava segment here. Put it on your Garmin Strava Segments.
To finish the ride in a reasonable time we will ride in a disciplined bunch. If your fitness is lacking consider joining the Intermediate group or sit on the back of the group to conserve energy.
Ride leader : TBC
Average Speed : 25 km/h – 30 km/h
This ride is recommended for all Elite riders only. The pace will be pretty fast and on the flat parts of the course we will ride together as a bunch so the km pass quickly. The group will wait at the top of the climbs and regroup for the descents. If you are not sure of your fitness or endurance then please do not join this group. Instead go with the intermediate group and as your fitness improves later in the season join the Elite ride group.
