Ride April 23rd – Huairou Coffee Stop Ride
This week we are back to Huairou on our favourite cycling road in Beijing – the X004. Liman, Shannon and Nathan are away at race so this weeks course is a simple out and back affair. To spice it up a bit we will offer a coffee stop mid ride at Tom’s mountain house. Our coffee sponsor Arabica Roasters have generously sponsored some bags of the Serk KOM blend and a coffee machine so each rider is welcome to stop in and enjoy some self serve coffee in the courtyard.
The starting point is the Kempinski Hotel. All riders will ride out from the same location and up the same climbs. Beginner riders will turn around at Tom’s place, the Intermediate will continue to the top of the next hill (Tower Hill) before turning around and the Elite will head all the the way to Liulimiao before heading back. The finish point is at the Kempinski – if you are quick you can grab a post ride beer in the Paulaner Courtyard before you drive back to the city.
All riders are required to fill the form below (including self drive) by Friday morning.
Departure Time : 07.00 Serk. Arrive at 06.45 am to load bikes
Return Time : 14:30 – 16:00 Serk
Our sponsor this week is Arabica Roasters. We’ve partnered up with Arabica to create a special Serk organic blend which we are calling the Serk KOM Blend. Now everyone can get a KOM !
It’s 65rmb a bag (250g) and will be roasted late in the week and delivered to you fresh in a bag at the start of the Serk ride. You can even choose to have the beans ground. To get your hands on a bag scan the QR code below (there are seperate QR codes for Beans or Ground) before 10am Thursday. COFFEE ORDERS NOW CLOSED
1. Beginner – 52km 956m Climbing
Quite a bit of climbing this week for the beginners. The good news is you’ll stop for coffee half way and have plenty of caffeine fuelled power to get you over the climbs on the way back.
Ride leader : TBC
Average Speed : 15 km/h – 20 km/h
This ride is recommended for all new beginner riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Intermediate Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.
2. Intermediate : 70km 1391m Climbing
The Intermediate is also an out and back route with an extra climb up to the top of Tower Hill. It’s a tough climb which eases up towards the top. Stop at the top and catch your breath and then enjoy the 9km downhill. Drop into Tom’s for a coffee in the courtyard before you tackle one more climb and another great descent before arriving back at the Kempinski.
Ride leader : Tom
Average Speed : 20 km/h – 25 km/h
This ride is recommended for all Intermediate riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Elite Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.
3. Elite – 132km 2400m Climbing
A long and hard ride this week. Lots of climbing but also some great descents (our favourite is the Tower Hill descent). We’ve added in a little loop close to Liulimiao. It’s a very quiet road and it cuts out one climb for the return journey. If there is time stop in at Tom’s on the way back for a quick coffee.
Ride leader : Morten
Average Speed : 25 km/h – 30 km/h
This ride is recommended for all Elite riders only. The pace will be pretty fast and on the flat parts of the course we will ride together as a bunch so the km pass quickly. The group will wait at the top of the climbs and regroup for the descents. If you are not sure of your fitness or endurance then please do not join this group. Instead go with the intermediate group and as your fitness improves later in the season join the Elite ride group.
