Serk Ride 17 – June 25th Huairou Highlights

Ride 17 is in Huairou !
We will travel a bit further out of the city in search of roads with less traffic and more shade. The beginners and Intermediate will  ride along a river at various points on the route. You could theoritically jump in and have a dip to cool off but we recommend staying on the bike. The rides aren’t so long but still have the regular amount of climbing in them.
For the Elites we have a new concept : A  long ride (150km)  that starts early and finishes around the same time as the other two groups. How do we do it ?  You’ll start riding from Serk early to beat the heat and the traffic. We’ve got a super route in mind on some shaded and less traversed roads – also suitable for those training for long distance Tri events.
Serk Backyard is open pre and post ride.
Last week we did our first beta test serving pre – ride coffee and post ride beer and food in the Serk back garden. This week will do the same with some incremental improvements. Having everyone together post ride is awesome – its a chance to share ride stories, chat with new riders, get your bike checked out and re-fuel with liquids and food. And the best part – its time efficient !
To promote our beer offerings and encourage more people to stay back after the ride we are offering a free ice cold Qingdao beer to any rider that downloads the route for the ride onto their Garmin or smartphone. Just show the route to us post ride and we will happily open a fresh beer for you.

Waiver

Note : Early Start ! It’s summer and its hot on the roads so early starts mean more pleasant riding conditions and you get back earlier.
Departure Time : 06.30 Serk.  Arrive at 06.00 for coffee or 6.15 to load bikes
Return Time : 12:30 – 15:30 Serk
1. Beginner –  Approx 45.6km 773m Climbing Approx
 Average Speed : 15 km/h – 20 km/h
This ride is recommended for all new beginner riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Intermediate Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.

3. Intermediate :  Approx 62km 1057m Climbing Approx.
 Average Speed : 20 km/h – 25 km/h
This ride is recommended for all Intermediate riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Elite Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.

3. Elite – 150km 1986m Climbing Approx
Elite will depart from the city at 5.45am. Arrive at 5.30am for a coffee and to load your bag in the Serk van. The van will be driven to the end point of the ride. The route out of the city is fast early in the morning and you’ll be in the mountains in no time. You climb Sihai at around 8am while its still quiet and cool and then its all downhill from there to the finish point at Liulimiao. You should arrive there around 11.30 – 12.00 at a similar time to the Beginners and Intermediates. From the finish point its a comfortable air conditioned bus ride back to Serk for beers and lunch. 150km under the belt before midday. We think this ride format will be popular for the warmer months. Please note if you are not sure you can keep up with the regular Elite pace you are still welcome to do the ride – just leave earlier. Any questions contact Shannon.
Average Speed : 25 km/h – 30 km/h
This ride is recommended for all Elite riders only. The pace will be pretty fast and on the flat parts of the course we will ride together as a bunch so the km pass quickly. The group will wait at the top of the climbs and regroup for the descents. If you are not sure of your fitness or endurance then please do not join this group. Instead go with the intermediate group and as your fitness improves later in the season join the Elite ride group.
