It’s the Golden Week in Beijing and that usually means sunny clear days. Yay ! Half of the city is away on holidays (including most of the Serk crew who are in Sichuan with 9 riders) so it won’t be a big ride this week. To avoid the bad traffic the ride has been moved to Thursday 6th of October. Liman and Shannon are out of town so the ride will be lead by Josh.
Its a quick drive out to Ming Tombs and a visit to the famous Sihai climb. Elite will do a clockwise loop and descend it (after plenty of climbing before hand). Intermediate do an out and back up the big climb and beginner ride to the base to enjoy the views of Huang Hua Cheng Great Wall.
Routes are pretty straightforward and the beginner ride is not too challenging.
Note new start time 7.00am at Serk
Registration full
Departure Time Thursday :
07.00 Serk. Arrive at 06.45 am (no coffee this week)
Return Time : 12:30 – 14:00 Serk
1. Beginner – 48km 680m Climbing
An out and back route to the base of the Great Wall Huang Hua Cheng. Only 2 major but short climbs ! It’s an out and back so you can turn around at any time and ride back if you’ve had enough. We highly recommend making it all the way to the Great Wall however – its a great view !
Ride leader : TBC
Average Speed : 15 km/h – 20 km/h
This ride is recommended for all new beginner riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Intermediate Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.
2. Intermediate – 75 km 1200m Climbing
A tough ride up the famous Sihai climb. Its a long 18km + climb – easy at the start and then slowly ramps up. Lots of nice switchbacks and views to the valley below. Once you reach the top turn around and enjoy one of the longest descents in Beijing. Stop at the service station at the 60km point to fuel up on water and coffee to get you over the final climb, then its downhill all the way back to Ming Tombs.
Ride leader : TBC
Average Speed : 20 km/h – 25 km/h
Please note if you are a new rider you need to join a beginner ride for your first outing with Serk. Once you’ve smashed that you are welcome to move up to Intermediate or Elite ! This ride is recommended for all Intermediate riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Elite Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.
3. Elite – 107km 1778m Climbing
A big loop from Ming Tombs all the way around to Sihai and return. 7 climbs along the way to build up some lactic acid in the legs ! The route is shaded for a large part and road surfaces are good (apart from the 4km of concrete road from the 40km point). A few small roads and tricky turns so make sure you have a navigation device !
Ride leader : Josh
Average Speed : 25 km/h – 30 km/h
This ride is recommended for all Elite riders only. The pace will be pretty fast and on the flat parts of the course we will ride together as a bunch so the km pass quickly. If you are not sure of your fitness or endurance then please do not join this group. Instead go with the intermediate group and as your fitness improves later in the season join the Elite ride group.
