Ride 32 – The Beijing Stelvio

Summer has definitely left the building. Damn now we are on the countdown to winter – how did we end up there again ? To pep things up a bit this week we are going to ride the famous Beijing Stelvio climb. Its quite a distance away (2 hours each way) to the West of the city but as always worth the trip. The loops we have planned are gorgeous and now that summer is finished should be reasonably traffic free.
This ride is a must – so don’t miss it.
Everyone will start in Shidu and we all ride up Hong Jing Lu (The Beijing Stelvio). Beginners will ride to the top and then come down again. Intermediate continue on and do a loop with another big climb. Elite add on an additional climb as well.
It’s getting cold out there so we recommend that you all have at least arm and leg warmers and full finger gloves. A few riders were caught out last week and were very very cold on the descents. If you need gear contact us – we have plenty of stock in the shop.
Please note if you have a ride pass your unused rides will expire at the end of December.  We will ride all the way to the end of December if there is demand but it starts getting pretty cold from the second half of November so if you have lots of rides left start using them now !

Waiver

Departure Time Saturday  :
07.00 Serk.  Arrive at 06.45 am to load bikes and grab a coffee
Return Time : 16:30 – 17:30 Serk (start / finish location is 2 hours away so expect a late return)
1. Beginner – 43km 994 m Climbing

A super nice route. Very quiet roads but with one long climb. The climb has a lot of switchbacks which makes for great pics and views back into the valley. This climb will be a challenge so be prepared to work hard.
Ride leader : TBC
Average Speed : 15 km/h – 20 km/h
This ride is recommended for all new beginner riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Intermediate Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.
2. Intermediate  – approx 67km 1649m Climbing

This is the best Intermediate loop we’ve designed all year. Don’t miss it ! A lot of climbing and some great descending as well. Picturesque, quiet – need we say more ?
Average Speed : 20 km/h – 25 km/h
Please note if you are a new rider you need to join a beginner ride for your first outing with Serk. Once you’ve smashed that you are welcome to move up to Intermediate or Elite ! This ride is recommended for all Intermediate riders. If you find the pace too slow next week you can move to the Elite Group. Its much better to start out on the easier ride and then move up rather than start on the faster ride and find yourself getting dropped and left behind.
4. Elite – 91 km 2254m Climbing

Same as the Intermediate ride but we’ve added on an extra concrete climb loop which looks awesome on the aerial photos. Under 100km but plenty of climbing to make this ride tough.
Ride leader : TBC
Average Speed : 25 km/h – 30 km/h
This ride is recommended for Elite riders only. The pace will be pretty fast and on the flat parts of the course we will ride together as a bunch so the km pass quickly. If you are not sure of your fitness or endurance then please do not join this group. Instead go with the intermediate group and as your fitness improves later in the season join the Elite ride group.
